Steven R. Lawyer is an assistant professor of clinical psychology at Idaho State University. He teaches a course in pseudoscience and is interested in beliefs in paranormal and pseudoscientific phenomena.
A skeptic, Lawyer said cryptozoology is still in the realm of pseudoscience. As a colleague of Jeff Meldrum, Lawyer is upset by the association Idaho State University has developed with sasquatch research.
“People also identify ISU as Bigfoot University,” he explained. “While that might be funny to some, it’s not funny to everyone… because it actually attenuates and weakens our standing as a university.”
The search for legendary and elusive cryptids is not a worthy one, Lawyer said.
“With most of these monsters of various kinds, the data out there is terribly unreliable,” he said. “I think most scientists have come to the conclusion that it’s just not a great use of time.”
Despite such drastic differences in opinions, Lawyer maintains that he would never mock Meldrum’s research.
“I don’t have any bad feelings about Jeff at all,” he said, “and even if I did, I wouldn’t say it, because I’m untenured, and I don’t want it to stay that way.
